Exploitation? Luxury Brand Burberry's African Inspired Line
Posted on 10:57 by Unknown
Well well well.....what do we have here! Last night singer Alicia Keys stepped out a red carpet event rocking a super cute shirt. After a bit of digging I found out that the Grammy winner's top is from a line by Burberry Prosum from their Spring 2012 line. So out of curiosity I started looking up the collection...
"Joyous, upbeat, nostalgic" is how designer Christopher Bailey from Burberry described the line in his own words.
Bailey says the line was inspired by the shapes of the legendary British artist Henry Moore -an English sculpture artist best known for his abstract monumental pieces.
With all due respect, is Christopher for real right now? This line is obviously inspired by Africa. I mean look at that print, since when have British folks come up with that? Go anywhere in the motherland and you will find a woman rocking any combinations of the prints in this collection. I actually don't mind the usage of the "ethnic exotica" as some call it but give credit where it's due! What I really want to know is- are these clothes made in Africa? Wouldn't be it great if they were? Isn't it time for luxury brands to bring their production and manufacturing to the continent? I'm just saying...
What do you think of Burberry's usage of this African print? Is it exploitation or am I just trippin? Holla at me in the comments section!
